Stay over in Aurangabad and visit Ellora along with Ajanta. Make sure you take a torch, so you can explore the furthest depths of the caves!

Feel free to get a local guide who will explain the intricacies of the place to you.
Like at Ajanta, there is a superb group of caves at Ellora, some Buddhist, some Hindu and some Jain: three religions for the price of a single visit, This is a fine example of tolerance in a wonderful natural setting.
My suggestion
There are always more people visiting Ellora than its neighbor Ajanta. It's better to go there early in the morning so you can look around the site when its quieter.
