To really experience the Sea of Galilee, it would be a shame to just stay on its shores: you must go on it in a boat. Once aboard I relived the miraculous catch of fish scene by throwing in the net to try to catch wriggling fish but it turned out this biblical scene is a bit misleading... all I caught was a tin can! But I was able to admire the landscape!
All around the sea you can find several places to include in your visit: Hattin, the site of the great battle between Saladin and the Crusaders; the Church of the Multiplication built in the location of the multiplication of loaves according to the Bible,... I was also able to go to the ruins of Capernaum and even to the place where the River Jordan meets the sea.
The shores are adapted for prayer and contemplation in different parts. I have a very deep memory of outdoor mass as the sun set... Whether you're a believer or not, let yourself go surrounded by the serenity of the water!

The Sea of Galilee is a well of freshness in a country where the desert and sand reign.

The sea of Galilee is Israel's biggest reserve of fresh water. It's probably why there aren't really any water sports on it. However, there are lots of things to see around the sea of Galilee which makes it a good choice for a visit during a <a href="/israel/">trip to Israel</a>. The area is especially well-known for having lots of important Christian sites (the Mount of the Beatitudes, Capernaum, the Church of the Multiplication) and some people even get baptised there. The lake is surrounded by numerous kibbutz of which some have become real holiday resorts (like Ein Gev kibbutz). Surprisingly, there's not a lot to see in the town of Tiberias. It's usually visited because it's the biggest town in the region and houses the tomb of Maimonides, one of the most distinguished Jewish thinkers of Arabic Andalusia. The more sporty among you can cycle round the lake (about 60 kilometres) but you need to keep your spirits up because there is absolutely no shade and the temperatures can get very high. I tried it once and gave up...
